Design Led Construction™
is intended as an integrated approach to construction procurement that
sets out a way of working designed to promote co-operation rather than
division within the various elements that make up the construction
industry.
Specifically, and most importantly, it sets out an
approach where designers and contractors work as a team throughout the project. The process understands the balance of risk and
responsibility, the way that this balance changes over the course of a project, and seeks to define a framework which
recognises this, avoiding unnecessary risk and
adversarial situations.
It is also an approach that seeks to
address the problem of the client who has only limited knowledge of
construction. By presenting clients with a roadmap at the beginning of
the project, and with team members who are all signed up to the roadmap,
it is hoped that many of the issues that arise with 'naive' clients can
be avoided.
We believe that the thinking behind DLC™ can be applied to projects of all scales and types, but from the outset it is squarely aimed at medium scale projects with straightforward clients who are looking for good quality buildings - the solid middle of the construction industry.
Of course, you're going to need a great deal more detail - look at the links below / in the What is Design Led Construction™ section for more. These will be developed and maintained
as the current description of the DLC™ approach.
For this to mean
something, it will need the engagement of a range of people from all
parts of the industry. Please do feel free to have your say - although I
believe we have a coherent framework, we certainly do not have the
answers to everything - look for the weak points, and suggest
improvements/alternatives - please!
